Stanislas Wawrinka was one of the first upsets in this year’s men’s competition at Wimbledon, as he went out in the first round to an in form Jurgen Melzer. The match was played over two days and took the full five sets to complete, eventually finishing 3-6 7-6 2-6 6-4 8-6 in favour of the Austrian. Wawrinka admitted he was disappointed to go out so early in the proceedings, but this was a tough draw for the Swiss player, since Melzer sits only 11 places lower in the world rankings.
The defeat was taken well by Wawrinka, who in any case will be returning to the All England Club later on this summer to compete in the Olympic games with his compatriot Roger Federer. “It’s tennis, part of the tennis,” Wawrinka said, describing the outcome. “It’s never easy to lose a match like that, especially in the fifth set. But I think was a good match. I think we played some great tennis during five sets. For sure, I’m really sad about the result. But at the end he was playing a little bit better, especially yesterday in the fifth set.” The loss is more surprising considering the Swiss number two defeated Janko Tipsarevic in an exhibition match at Boodles during his warm-up for the tournament. Sadly he couldn’t continue this calibre of tennis and must watch the rest of the tournament from the side of the court.
The Olympics will begin on the 27th of July and it will be the first time in Olympic history that the tennis will be played at a Grand Slam venue. Wawrinka is of course behind world number 3 Roger Federer in the Swiss team, but will certainly be a tough draw for anyone who encounters him early on, and has tasted Olympic success before. At the last Olympics he took the Gold medal in men’s doubles with Federer, and it was that year that saw him achieve his career high singles ranking – number 9. Wawrinka will be hoping that this year’s games will bring him another taste of victory, although he may find it difficult to triumph on grass instead of his favourite clay surface.
Stanislas Wawrinka has secured his place in the second round of the French Open after a nail biting victory over unheralded Flavio Cipolla. The Italian new comer looked strong, but was unable to hold back the strength and quality of Wawrinka play as the twenty seven year old Swiss number two fired to a two set lead winning 6-3, 6-3. However the Young Italian fought back in the third set securing a 4-6 and went on to secure his second set of the game with a 3-6 victory in the fourth set. Unfortunately for Cipolla, the world number twenty Wawrinka came back strong to finish the game with a fifth set victory finishing 6-2.
Wawrinka best performance at the French open was a fourth round exit in 2010 and in last year’s competition is hoping to eclipse these efforts by reaching the business end of this year’s competition. However after a slip up in his first round, which in truth should have been a bread and butter victory for the Swiss, this is looking doubtful. 2012 has been a solid if uninspiring year for Wawrinka, who at twenty seven would be looking to hit the peak of his game, but with so many quality players in men’s tennis at the moment, the chances of Wawrinka gaining any ground in grand slam tournaments look few and far between. The Swiss number tow would really need to play well above himself to have any chance of offering any real possibility of challenging the big players.
Outside of open tennis Wawrinka will be more concerned about adding to his gold medal achieved in Beijing earned with fellow countryman and current world number 3 Roger Federer, by achieving a second doubles victory at this year’s London Olympics.

Stanislas Wawrinka has a German background while he himself is a Swiss tennis player. Wawrinka, unlike others prefers playing on a clay surface and has a kind of advantage when he plays with his backhand as he considers backhand strokes to be his power.
Wawrinka has been ranked world number 9 as of the year 2009 and he has done his country – Switzerland proud by winning the gold medal for his country in the 2008 Summer Olympics. During this event he had Roger Federer as his partner and they together achieved this goal by defeating Swedish Team Simon Aspelin.
Come 2011 and Wawrinka started his session in a very impressive manner indeed. Wawrinka defeated world number 6 – Berdych to win the Chennai Open crown. Going further Wawrinka defeated Xavier Malisse in the final in three sets. Coming to the Australian Open, Wawrinka reached the quarter finals of the tournament after defeating Andy Roddick. Wawrinka was finally defeated by Ronald Young in the second round of the 2011 U.S Open.
A different kind of strange news popped up in the year 2011 in the month of September when he mentioned that he will be no longer under the assistance of his coach – Lundgron. He had taken a decision that he would play the rest of the season without any assistance or without any coach. Coming to the 2011 Swiss Indoors Basel Wawrinka made it to the semi finals defeating Florian Mayer but finally succumbed to Roger Federer giving Federer the title. Wawrinka also played bif matches like the Davis Cup in the year 2009 where the result was tyed with Italy but the interesting part being that he had defeated Andreas Sippi in the first match itself.
