The French female tennis player Alize Cornet wants to do something similar to what her compatriot Marion Bartoli had done at the All England Club last year.
Bartoli had become the Wimbledon Champion in 2013 despite not being one of the favourites. But, the thing with her was that she had got a very easy draw.
Only in the final, Bartoli was up against a strong opponent. Until then, she had been playing against young, inexperienced players. So, she was a bit lucky on that front, but, that doesn’t seem to be going to happen with Cornet.
Cornet is supposed to have to face some tough players on her way to the final.
The confidence of Cornet is very high at the moment though. She has recently defeated the red hot favourite Serena Williams and has qualified for the pre quarter final round of a slam after a long time. The last time that she’d gone that far in a slam was back in 2009.
Talking to the reporters after beating Serena, Cornet said, “It’s like a dream. To get better of somebody like Serena and qualify for the pre quarters, I’m so glad.”
“I have been in the pre quarters of a Slam once before i.e. 5 years ago in Australia and that seems to be so long back.”
“It’s a great day for me, but, my job is not done and it’s very important for me to keep that in mind.”
“I have been hugely inspired by Marion and I am looking to do what she did here the previous year.”
Cornet has been eliminated from the Round of 32 of Grand Slams quite a few times in the past, but, this time around, she has made it through to the Round of 16. Let’s see if she can go all the way.

David Nalbandian took the decision of quitting from tennis due to shoulder injury. He is a former Wimbledon finalist. He came to the world of tennis in 2002 and went up to the final against Lleyton Hewitt in SW19 tournament.
Apart from being the finalist he has also reached up the semi finals of many grand slams such as Australian Open, French Open and US Open. His highest rank was 3rd in 2006 in the month of March. With the infamous incident of 2012 at the final of the Queens he accidentally injured his leg by kicking the hoarding of an advertisement due to which the official of tennis Andrew McDougall got injured. The official was brutally injured and blood started to spew from his leg for which David Nalbandian was disqualified when he was playing against Marin Cilic.
After that he became renowned for his temper and aggression. The issue became a concern for police investigation and he had to pay 40,000 Euros as indemnity and other prize money of his was forfeited. His form deteriorated and his rank slided down to 231 when he decided to call it quits. He himself stated that he does not feel fit to continue. But David Nalbandian enjoyed some of the brightest moments in his tennis career in the junior tennis tournaments. He did a lot for his country by winning the Davis Cup and his personal best was the Masters Cup in 2005 and Madrid Masters in 2007. His final appearance was in an exhibition match against Rafael Nadal in Buenos Aires in November.
He could have turned things around but his injury left him helpless. Otherwise he has beaten all the top ranking players Djokovic, Nadal and Federer in succession He was a leading tennis player during his playing time.
Much to the surprise of everybody, Stanislas Wawrinka who had made a great start to the season by achieving glory in the Australian Open was defeated by a far lesser renowned Spanish player Guillermo Garcia Lopez in the first round of the French Open yesterday. Wawrinka lost the match by 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 0-6.
The Swiss star never looked like matching his opponent shot for shot. He was off colour from the word go. He just couldn’t get going. The poor shots kept coming off his racquet continuously and he ended up suffering a major setback.
The no. of unforced errors committed by Wawrinka was more than double of the no. of unforced committed by his opponent. That clearly tells the difference between the performances of the two players.
Speaking in the post match interview, Wawrinka said, “It’s always gutting when you lose your very first match in the tournament, but, nothing can be done about it now. What I need to do is to accept it and move on.”
“I tried to bounce back, but, things just didn’t happen. It was that kind of day for me. I will have to sit back and have a look at this performance of mine and find out what went drastically wrong.”
This was the first time that Wawrinka had entered a Grand Slam tournament as one of the top favourites and it seems he just couldn’t soak up that pressure.
When asked if he was feeling the pressure, the Swiss player said, “No, it wasn’t like that. I was calm, but, I just faltered in execution.”
Wawrinka was having one hell of a season before this defeat. Not only had he won the Australian Open by beating Rafael Nadal in the final, he had won the Monte Carlo Masters tournament as well.
